Text in English: The baluster belongs to a sculpture group which comprises 142 balusters.
The balusters have probably been painted; traces of red and white paint have been noted.
Location and function on ship
The balusters have probably been placed partly to the quarter galleries of the aftercastle and partly to the beak-head. Baluster No. 05825 has been placed on one of the two quarter galleries, on starboard side.
At the quarter galleries, the balusters serve as a sort of grill occupying the space between the roof of the galleries and their base. At the beak-head they seem to have an analogous function in the space between the railings and the sides of the beak-head basket. All balusters are cut obliquely so as to fit in their places. The undecorated "tongue" that is characteristic of the balusters on the quarter galleries, constitute the attachment area and would have been hidden when mounted on the ship. The balusters on the beak-head were attached by a thin tenon on either end. Balusters have only been remounted on the beak-head.
Woodcarver
The woodcarver is unknown. The balusters are, as to form and decoration, of the same basic type, but with certain characteristic differences.
