Text in English: The sculpture group consists of two consoles carved as rather small figures of devils. A third devil figure, companion piece to No. 07902, has not been found.
The sculpture was found midships, to port.
Location on ship
The figure is located on the upper part of the bulk-head which separates the helmsman''s cabin from the upper deck. The devil is located in the centre of the bulk-head while the other devil, No. 07902, is placed furthest to the right and close to the doorpost of the port-side door into the helmsman''s cabin. The third figure was placed furthest to the left.
Iconography
The figures are called devils here but it is not certain that they should be seen as devils in the Christian and biblical sense, even though they have bat wings, an attribute of devils in Christian iconography, where they represent the forces of evil. It is equally possible that the artist intended a figure of Pan or a satyr, one of those natural beings in human form with goats'' legs and tail that appear in classical mythology, among other things as followers of Bacchus. They were often used in renaissance and baroque art. Satyrs comprised an important element in Flemish graphic editions of grotesques.
Woodcarver unknown. The two sculptures are carved by same artist. The masks on the socles are of the same type as the clinker-built console heads that lie on the roof of the lower quarter gallery to port, see example No. 00872 (Category No. 22).
