Pärlbrev är brev som utgörs av pärlor trädda på tråd likt ett smycke. Färgerna på pärlorna, den ordning de har eller de mönster som uppstår har olika betydelser. Mottagaren tolkar brevets budskap och kan sedan bära det med sig.
Pärlbrev har ofta budskap om kärlek eller trohet och kan beskrivas som kärleksbrev. De skickades speciellt bland ungdomar för att betyga kärlek, trohet och hopp om en lycklig framtid. Meddelandet i ett brev kan till exempel vara att "min pojke lever på andra sidan bergen", "min pojke har tjugo kor" eller att "han är stark och vacker."
Pärlbrevet är tillverkat av Annah Ngema och Mrs Bottelezi i Umphumulo, Sydafrika, troligen i närheten av inköpet på en utställning på konstfack 1963. Bruket av pärlbrev minskar i samband med att skrivkunnigheten utbreder sig, men traditionen lever kvar och de tillverkas än idag.

Vit: Renhet, Kärlek, Trohet, Oskuldsfullhet
Svart: Giftermål, Pånyttfödelse, Sorg, Förtvivlan, Död
Röd: Passion, Tårar, Åtrå, Ilska, Sorg, Smärta
Rosa: Fattigdom
Gul: Rikedom, Fruktsamhet, Svartsjuka
Grön: Belåtenhet, Fruktsamhet, Sjukdom, Svartsjuka
Blå: Trohet, Plikt, Ensamhet
