Ombord på fartyg finns alltid minst en skeppsklocka. Förr användes klockan främst till att markera tiden. Varje vakt var fyra timmar lång och vid första halvtimmens utgång slogs ett slag, eller glas som det kallades, på skeppsklockan. Efter den andra haltimmen slogs två glas och så vidare. När vakten var slut slogs åtta glas. Skeppsklockan kan även användas för att påkalla uppmärksamhet, exempelvis vid dimma.
Bruket av skeppsklockor går långt tillbaka. På 1670-talet omnämns skeppsklockor som en nymodighet i ett protokoll från Amiralitetet. Den äldsta bevarade skeppsklockan är från Kronan 1670 som finns på Kalmar länsmuseum. Från början hade troligen klockorna inga fartygsnamn ingjutna eftersom de återanvändes.
