Fatet tillhörde familjen Rosen från Nargö, som bestod av paret Viktor och Erika Rosen och deras barn Ivar och Margit. Den 4 november 1943 packade de sin fiskebåt och reste med sikte på Sverige. På grund av storm och sjögång blev de dock tvungna att stanna i Finland, varifrån de senare åkte vidare till Sverige.
