När de vita bussarna avslutat sina transporter våren 1945 tog de vita fartygen vid. Dessa förde svårt sjuka koncentrationslägerfångar till beredskapssjukhus i Sverige. Till Kalmar kom fartyget Prins Carl sommaren 1945 tre gånger med fångar från ett brittiskt mellanläger i Lübeck. De f d fångarna, de flesta polska judar och motståndsmän, inhystes på Söderportskolan. De som bedömdes ha tyfus eller TBC inkvarterades på Epidemisjukhuset på Lindö. Då det var de allra svårast sjuka som kom till Kalmar - en kvinna vägde vid ankomsten, två månader efter krigsslutet, endast 28 kg - avled ett femtiotal. Två var döda vid ankomsten till Kalmar, resten avled under vistelsen här. Dessa ligger begravda i två gemensamma gravar. Judarna fick sitt sista vilorum på judiska begravningsplatsen i Kalmar medan de kristna, mest polska motståndsmän, har sin grav på Norra kyrkogården. De flesta som överlevde sjukhusvistelsen lämnade Sverige under år 1946. Några for till USA, några återvände hem. Ett fåtal stannade i Sverige. De döda hyllas genom minnesstenar; en på Norra kyrkogården, en på den mosaiska begravningsplatsen. Några av de överlevande har engagerat sig i kampen mot nazismen, att sprida vittnesmål om det ohyggliga.
Walter Olson föddes i Örebro 26 januari 1900. Han utbildade sig till fotograf och 28 år gammal kom han till Kalmar. Här köpte han systrarna Winells ateljé på Södra Långgatan 26. Där etablerade han den firma dit Kalmars befolkning gick för att fotografera sig. Hans porträttjournal omfattar 77000 namn under 40 år. Man kan följa personers förvandling från ungdom via vuxen till gammal genom de bilder Olson tog och man kan följa familjer genom tre generationer.
Walter Olson hade flera strängar på sin lyra. Han var pressfotograf då tidningarna inte hade egna fotografer. Hände något ringde man stadens fotografer. Han arbetade även med reklambilder, i första hand åt de olika glasbruken i regionen. Vid större evenemang i Kalmar med omgivningar var Walter Olson där. Hans bilder skildrar Kalmar och kalmarborna under tiden 1928-1968 då han överlät firman till Östen Christiernsson. Denne donerade hela Walter Olsons negativsamling till Kalmar läns museum där en del av bilderna digitaliserats. Hela porträttjournalen är överförd till digitalt format och är på så vis lätt sökbar för den som vill beställa bilder på släktingar.
Walter Olson avled i Kalmar år 1988.
