Sundsvalls segelsällskap bildades 1877 av konsul C. G. Wickberg samt några andra intresserade personer. Man ansåg att Sundsvall likväl som andra kuststäder "borde erhålla ett segelsällskap för att utbilda ungdomen i konsten att sköta mindre farkoster". Det inköptes ett antal mindre båtar och kappseglandet lockade ungdomar att prova sporten. Från starten kunde endast män söka inträde i klubben, först 1902 godtogs även kvinnor som medlemmar. Intresset har gått i vågor och frågor om nyinköp av båtar och hamnproblem har ständigt varit på tapeten.
Så småningom väcktes idén om ett eget klubbhus och Raholmsudden på södra Alnö ansågs vara en lämplig plats med fri utsikt mot havet, Svartviksbukten och ytterhamnen. Huset skulle fungera som en angenäm tillflyktsort under sommardagarna med möjlighet till övernattning. För att lösa penningfrågan satte man hoppet till sågverksägarna för bidrag med virke till byggnationen. 1911 stod det ståtliga klubbhuset Vindhem färdigt för invigning med den kände Ragnar Österberg som arkitekt. 1951 byggdes restaurang- och dansbanedelen ut med källarmästare Gunnar Wilöf från Knaust som krögare. Restaurangen med den natursköna omgivningen blev snabbt ett populärt utflyktsmål för sundsvallsborna. Vindhems historia fick dock ett dramatiskt slut under natten till den 14 augusti 1979 då byggnaden brann ner till grunden.
