Den som promenerar eller cyklar över Lindö i Kalmar har säkert lagt märke till en röd tegelbyggnad. De målade röda korsen på entrédörrarna skvallrar om att byggnaden använts som sjukhus, vilket stämmer. Byggnaden uppfördes 1894 som stadens nya epidemisjukhus, efter ritningar av stadsingenjör Ivan Björkman. Vården beträffande epidemiska, och vid denna tiden livshotande, sjukdomar bestod i första hand inte om behandling, utan om isolering för att förhindra spridning. Platsen på Lindö ansågs därför vara mycket lämplig för ett epidemisjukhus; stadsnära, men ändå avskilt. Byggnaden var indelad i två avdelningar med plats för sammanlagt 24 patienter fördelade på fyra sjuksalar och fyra enskilda sjukrum. Skulle en större epidemi utbryta kunde man med extrasängar ta emot 80 patienter. Sjuksalarna, sjukrummen och de två dagrummen var förlagda till gavlarna. I byggnadens mittparti fanns kök, sköterskerum och läkarens rum samt badrum och klosetter. Redan år 1900 gjordes en tillbyggnad och några år senare, 1908, uppfördes en fristående köksbyggnad med vaktmästarbostad. I området norr om sjukhuset planterades barr- och lövträd skydd för nordliga vindar och för att skapa en parkmiljö i den i övrigt öppna omgivningen, men möjligen även för den hälsobringande effekt som barrskog ansågs ha. År 1937 stod det nya lasarettet vid Stensberg klart. Här fanns då en särskild epidemiavdelning och verksamheten i epidemisjukhuset på Lindö lades ned. Byggnaderna på Lindö har därefter använts som förråd av Civilförsvaret, tillfälligt beredskapssjukhus, föreningslokaler åt Röda korset, musikhus med replokaler och skola. Idag används lokalerna som konstnärsateljéer av föreningen Konstnärer i Kalmar. Det f.d. epidemisjukhuset är förhållandevis välbevarat. Och trots att det nu är drygt 70 år sedan byggnaden användes för sitt ursprungliga ändamål, finns ännu spår kvar från denna verksamhet. Den kanske mest spännande ”lämningen” hittar man i husets källare. Mellan två av källarrummen finns en cylinderformad behållare placerad, med öppningsbara luckor i var ände och innehållande en utdragbar trådback. Några rör är kopplade till anordningen. På en liten skylt går att läsa: ”A. B. RECK, PATENT, 1885, KJÖBENHAVN”. Den märkliga behållaren som idag används för förvaring, är en autoklav, d.v.s. en desinfektions- och torkugn för textilier med ånga som desinfektionsmedel. Anläggningen är tillverkad någon gång mellan åren 1885-1898 av Anders Borch Reck från Köpenhamn. Ugnen kunde ”användas till att döda ohyra, bakterier, sporer och smittämnen i tyg, sängkläder, lump och dylika saker med tillhjelp av ånga och till att torka dessa på ett hastigt, verksamt och ekonomiskt sätt”. De smittade klädesplaggen, sängkläderna och madrasserna lades alltså in i behållarens trådback från det ena rummet och kunde sedan plockas ut desinficerade och klara genom luckan från det andra rummet.
