Johan Fredrik Dryselius föddes den 27 november 1826 i Karlskrona och avled den 29 augusti 1911 i Kalmar. Senare i livet kallade han sig John.
Dryselius började sin fotografiska bana som daguerrotypist i Karlskrona senast 1854 och hör därmed till de första fotograferna i Sverige.
Senast 1857 flyttade Dryselius till Kalmar, en stad där han dock arbetat tidigare då han finns publicerad i Calmarposten 1854 och i Barometern 1856.
År 1860 öppnade Dryselius ateljé på Kaggensgatan 11. Sju år senare flyttade han till Södra Långgatan 26. Denna ateljé överlät han 1898 till Herman Sandberg.
