Bilden, som bör vara tagen från mittpartiet av västra slottsvallen mot Stadsparken i norr, visar utgrävningen av torrgraven och vallgraven väster om Kalmar slott. I fonden syns stadsträdgårdsmästarens tjänstebostad och till vänster skymtar en byggnad som hör till dåvarande lasarettsområdet.
Fotot ingår i ett äldre album med foton, huvudsakligen tagna i anslutning till den 1932-1934 bedrivna utgrävningen av Slottsfjärden. Arbetet skedde under ledning av Harald Åkerlund och bedrevs som AK-arbete. Fyllmassorna användes för att bygga upp nuvarande Tjärhovet. I den syrefattiga leran hade det organiska materialet bevarats väl, varför man förutom keramik även fann ett flertal fartyg samt smärre fynd som handskar och skor.
Fotografierna är på baksidorna som regel försedda med påskrifter om dag för tagningen och fotografens namn. Albumet är utfört i mörk papp och bladen är sammanhållna av en textilsnodd.
