Alaska skapades av Hilma Svedal, född Karlsson/Wounsch 2 oktober 1870 på grannön Syd-Hällsö, död 2 juli 1965.
Hilma utvandrade till New York när hon var 27 år (1897) och senare till Alaska. Hon återvände då till hembygden efter cirka 30 år i Amerika, där hon levt ett strapatsrikt liv som bland annat guldgräverska i Alaska. Utanför Strömstad på Nord-Långö, som hon fått som arv, byggde hon upp sin skapelse med hjälp av bland annat Nils Johansson och bröderna Olsson från Seläter (som ligger på fastlandet mitt emot ön).
På 1930-talet kunde hon ta emot sina första gäster på Alaska där hon byggt upp terrasser, tempel, torn, paviljonger, vägar, soffor, bord med mera av enbart stenar, snäckor och cement. Inspiration hade hon fått från villaträdgårdar med enorm blomsterprakt som hon sett i Californien. Stenarna hämtade Hilma Svedal med sin eka från grannöarna. Även ett värdshus, Golden Inn, fanns på ön, men detta brann ner år 1962.
På 1950-talet överläts rörelsen till systersonen Johan Carl Lundberg som drev stället i 15 år. Senare ägare var Oskar Spigerhäll och därefter Staten/Naturvårdsverket som oklokt nog demolerade det mesta av Hilmas livsverk. Glädjande nog började arbetsförmedlingen i Strömstad och AMU-gruppen år 1992 att restaurera Alaska på nytt. Några av Hilmas byggnadsverk är fortfarande kvar i original, exempelvis Vindarnas tempel, som syns från Seläter på fastlandet, samt Golden gate som ligger mitt på ön.
Sveriges dödbok 1947-2003 uppger: Svedal, född Karlsson, Hilma, (1870-1965) Knarrevik; kyrkobokförd i Skee kbfd, Vette kn, Göteborgs och Bohus län, Bohuslän. Ingen uppgift om födelseort. Gift kvinna 1912 [med norrmannen Johan Svedal].
