- Chokladfabriken startades av V. S. Johansson 1903. En mycket småskalig tillverkning på Storgatan 25 var grunden till den "Röda Ugglan". 1910 flyttade chokladtillverkningen till före detta Ångbakeriets lokaler och en större källare på Östra Sjögatan 20. Företaget bytte namn till AB Kalmar konfekt och karamellfabrik. År 1915 flyttade verksamheten till den då nedlagda Gustafsbergs tänsdsticksfabriks lokaler på Spännarebacken i Kalmar. 1926 ändrades namnet till AB Kalmar Chokladfabrik. Produkterna såldes under varumärket Röda Ugglan. Fabriken förstördes av brand 1928 och efter en viss tvekan byggdes den upp igen. Fabriken byggdes till med 2700 kvadratmeter i tre våningar 1940. 1948 köptes företaget av KF, som 1970 fusionerade bolaget med de danska och norska konsumentkooperativens chokladfabriker. Företaget fick nu namnet Nordchoklad AB. Verksamheten hade 750 anställda varav ca 400 i Kalmar, 25 i Åstorp och 325 i Kolding, Danmark. Verksamheten slogs ihop med Svea Choklad i Norrköping och bytte namn till Candelia. Cloetta köpte i sin tur Candelia och lade ner tillverkningen i Kalmar 1998. I lokalen finns numera Friskis och svettis samt olika myndigheter.
