HistorySkalbankarna på Kuröd, Bräcke och Samneröd har varit tre separata naturreservat i över 50 år. 2010 bildades ett större sammanhängande naturreservat med namnet Kuröd. År 1997 påbörjades omfattande avverkningar, röjningar och hägnader för att förstärka områdets mosaiklandskap med dess rika biologiska mångfald.
Skalbankarna utgörs av en större samling skal från huvudsakligen djur som bara delvis blivit förvandlade till fossiler. Skalbankarna i Uddevalla är de största i världen. Fossilerna på Skalbankarna är från istiden och är drygt 10 000 år gamla. På skalbankarna har man hittat skelettdelar av späckhuggare, vitval, knölval och isbjörn för att nämna några. Sammanlagt har man hittat 103 marina ryggradslösa djur i skalbankarna på Bräcke-Kuröd.
De vita kullarna av skalgrus vid Bräcke, består till största delen av stenmusslan och jättehavstulpanen. Det finns också betydande mängder av blåmussla och vindeltornsnäcka. Sammanlagt har man hittat 103 marina ryggradslösa djur i skalbankarna på Bräcke-Kuröd. De flesta arter är så kallade glaciala, de levde här i ett ishav och bildades under en tidsrymd av 200 -1000 år. Vetenskapsmän som har utforskat denna fauna är bland andra Carl von Linné 1746, J Gwen Jeffreys 1862, Hjalmar Odhner 1927 och Anders Warén 1969.
I samband med att man grävde ut skalbankarna för att tillverka hönsfoder hittade man också många fynd av marina däggdjur. Det var främst skelettdelar av vikaren, vår minsta sälart, men också späckhuggare, vitval, knölval, storsäl och isbjörn. Sveriges äldsta fågelben hittades 1969 i Samneröd skalbankar. Det var ben från ejdrar som beräknades vara cirka 10 700 år gamla.
Efter att industrin på området lagts ner anordnades motocrosstävlingar, både SM och VM på området under 1950- och 60-talen. Idag finns ett museum på platsen och naturreservatet hålls öppet med hjälp av betesdjur.
