Gåva 1986 från Ellen Gothefors, Stockholm.
Barnhemmets verksamhet startades 1866 av Calmar Stads- och Slotts Missionsförsamlingar och höll då till vid Norrgård. Man tog hand om pojkar i åldern 3–9 år. 1872 fick man köpa baron Axel Raabs gård på Malmen vid Trädgårdsgatan 16.
Vid den här tiden startades Norrgård, en uppfostringsanstalt för pojkar. Då valde barnhemmet att byta inriktning och blev ett hem för flickor ”som företrädesvis behöfva skydd mot prostitutionens härjningar.” Verksamheten drevs fram till 1890 då Kalmar Församling övertog ansvaret. Föreståndarinna var Anna Severina Petersson. Granne med Kalmar Församlings barnhem startade Barnavårdsnämnden i Kalmar ytterligare ett barnhem. Församlingens verksamhet kom då att kallas Gamla barnhemmet och Barnavårdsnämndens för Nya barnhemmet.
På 1930-talet tog planen för att bredda Trädgårdsgatan form och flera av husen utmed gatan revs. 1940 skulle barnhemmets båda hus rivas. Det finns lite olika uppgifter om vart man tog vägen men enligt församlingsböckerna ska man ha flyttat till kvarteret Valnötsträdet i anslutning till Kalmar slott.
