Café Orient, nedre och övre
1936 stod det hypermoderna ASEA:s nya affärs- och bostadshus klart på Storgatan 5. I en av husets affärslokaler flyttade Café Orient, kallat Nedre Orient in. Kaféet öppnade redan tio år tidigare av en driftig kvinna vid namn Bessie Holm, men med det nybyggda huset fick kaféet nya moderna lokaler i funkisstil. I dagspressen beskrevs de nya kafélokalerna som ”en exposition i färger”. Bagerilokalerna innanför kaféet hade modern elektrisk bakugn och den senaste teknikens bakutrustning. Här fanns också en populär uteservering under sommartid. 1948 öppnade Bessie Holm ytterligare ett Café Orient, nämligen Övre Orient, då i det nybyggda Nobelstiftelsens hus på Storgatan 33.
Storgatan 33
Adressen Storgatan 33 bär på en lång historia. Här stod ett av stenstadens klassiska landmärken, Hellbergska huset. I huset bodde bagaren och fotografen Fredrik Wilhelm Hellberg som också var husets byggherre 1881. Det fanns redan tidigt en servering på hörnet med ett skyltfönster fyllt av godsaker. Det sägs att Hellberg var den förste som introducerade wienerbröd i Sundsvall. På adressen växte också författaren Lars Ahlin upp. Huset skadades svårt i den katastrofala stadsbranden 1888, men byggdes upp igen. 1947 revs Hellbergska huset och ersattes av Nobelstiftelsens hus. Här fanns både ölstuga och kafé under 1900-talet.
Övre Orient var känt som ett lugnt och elegant kafé. När kaféet öppnade i slutet av 1940-talet var de trivsamma lokalerna inredda med eleganta möbler i rött och blått. Men det mest iögonfallande var den porlande fontän som fanns mitt i lokalen. Tidens musik strömmade från en AGA-Baltic radiogrammofon. På den två våningar höga vägg som mötte besökarna i entrén fanns en skog i nästan naturlig storlek, målad av konstnären Pharo Gagge.
Hit kom besökare i alla åldrar. Särskilt många var ungdomarna och skoleleverna, eftersom läroverket och flickskolan låg alldeles i närheten. Dessutom hade kaféet öppet till 22.00, vilket gjorde det populärt som fikaställe efter biobesök.
Kaféet bestod av två våningar. På nedre plan fanns en lång disk bakom glas med alla tänkbara bakverk att välja mellan. På övre våningen var det elegant inrett med fin utsikt över Norrmalm, Skolhusallén, Storgatan, Selångersån och även det vackra sluttningarna upp mot Norra Stadsberget.
Övre Orient serverade den sista koppen kaffe klockan 22.00 lördagen den första augusti 1965. Mary-Anne Börlin, en av servitriserna som varit med från starten för 17 år sedan, jobbade också den sista kvällen. Det blev herrkonfektionsfirman Henrix som övertog Orients lokaler.
