Helena Sophia Isberg lärde sig tidigt att snida i trä av sin far som var skomakare. Efter 1840, sedan familjen flyttat till Motala, försörjde hon sig helt på detta konsthantverk. År 1847 väckte hon uppseende på Slöjdföreningens utställning i Stockholm men avböjde hedrande anbud om vidareutbildning och stannade i Motala till sin död.
Hennes arbeten är mest nyttosaker som doser, piphuvuden och urnor men hon snidade också tavlor. På de flesta av hennes verk finns bildframställningar, ur nordiska gudasagan, svenska historien, Napolen I:s liv med flera ämnen, vilka är inramade i lätt stiliserad blomsterornamentik.
Hennes verk har varit utställda i London, Wien och Paris.

Sophia Isberg (1819-1875) eller "Jungfru Isberg" som hon kallades, verkade hela sitt vuxna liv i Motala i Östergötland. Träsnideri av utsöktaste slag var hennes specialitet. Hennes far som var hantverkare undervisade dottern i unga år i svarvning och snideri. För övrigt tackade hon nej till alla erbjudanden om utbildning. Hon tycks ha värnat om sin integritet på ett rakt och tydligt sätt. Karl XV lär ha sänt ett bud efter henne vid ett besök i Motala. Den utsände fick till svar: "Har han något att säga får han komma hit."
Hennes träsniderier i form av rikt dekorerade urnor, cigarrställ, pipor, klockställ och dosor beundrades inte bara i hemlandet. De visades bl. a. på världsutställningarna i Paris 1855 och London 1862. Förebilder till figurscenerna i djup relief med minutiös detaljrikedom hämtade hon från grafiska bilder i tidningar och tidskrifter.
Verk av Sophia Isberg finns förutom hos flera privatsamlare på Motala museum, Östergötlands länsmuseum, Nationalmuseum och Nordiska museet.
