- Håkan Lans påbörjade utvecklingen av digitaliseringsbordet 1972. Den uppkom av behovet av ett styrdon vid digitalisering av seismiska mätningar. En karta lades ut över ett ritbord och mätpunkter markerades med hårkorset. Lans insåg att digitaliseringsbordet kunde användas för andra tillämpningar där man arbetade med interaktiv grafik. Han tog kontakt med Houston Instruments i USA och reste dit för att visa digitaliseringsbordet. De ville ha en förbättring av digitaliseringsbordet eftersom det tappade orienteringen om man lyfte pekdonet och Lans utvecklade en version som hade absolut positionering. Detta åstadkoms genom att ett system av slingor, fyra olika i separata lager, med vissa frekvenser. Positionen bestäms genom det induktivt avkännande pekdonet och den fasvridning som uppstår för signalerna i slingorna. Precisionen var 1/10 mm, mindre än man kunde måtta med hårkors. Efter två år ville Houston Instrument lägga ner tillverkningen eftersom de bara tillverkat 70 enheter men Håkan Lans övertalade dem att fortsätta eftersom han insåg att persondatorn stod för ett genombrott och att det då skulle finnas ett behov av pekdon. Kort därefter ökade efterfrågan dramatiskt och Håkan Lans uppskattar att 10 000 enheter tillverkas i månaden.
