Museets äldsta långkikare är från cirka 1750 och har rör av papp. Mot slutet av århundradet blev kikare vanligare till sjöss och tillverkades då av trä. Först vid mitten av 1800-talet tillverkades huvudröret av mässing och kläddes med mahognyfanér coh senare läder. Inom flottan kallades dessa enkelrör för långkikare, medan man inom armén kallade dem tubkikare.
Under 1700-talet lyckades man lösa optikens avbildningsfel. För marint bruk förfinade man till exempel terresterkikare till ljusstarka dag- och nattkikare, ”Day & Night”. De tillverkades av mässing med ett eller två utdrag (förlängningar). Terra=jord. Terresterkikare är alltså en jordkikare till skillnad mot en stjärnkikare.
