Försöksfarkost i trä, metall och glasfiberarmerad plast. Längd 7,5 meter. Bredd 3,1 meter.
Denna mycket udda skapelse är egentligen ett mellanting mellan flygplan och båt. Marinförvaltningen beställde den av SAAB som utvecklade den under 1960-talets första år. Från början hette den bara SAAB 401 och saknade då de två framdrivningsmotorerna med sina träpropellrar. Då dessa satts på blev namnet 401 B. Idag saknas tyvärr den kraftiga motor som drev lyftfläkten. SAAB 401B kunde göra närmare 50 knop över fruset vatten. Farten var något lägre på öppet vatten (39 knop) och över land (44 knop).
1964 överlämnades farkosten till Marinförvaltningen som redan 1967 skänkte den till Sjöhistoriska museet. Någon svensk svävare har därefter inte utvecklats. Svävaren står på sin specialtillverkade transportvagn.
Svävare finns i dag i många olika länder och i många olika utföranden.
Svävare är farkoster som med en mycket stark fläkt bygger upp en luftkudde under sig. Farkosten lyfts helt enkelt upp på denna luftkudde och friktionen mot underlaget blir minimal. Med vanliga propellrar sätts sedan farkosten i rörelse och mycket höga farter kan uppnås. Oftast har svävarna en "kjol" under sig som hjälper till att hålla luftkudden på plats. Detta gör att de kan ta sig fram både på öppen sjö och över land.
