"Maries rosa nalle
1950-taiet
Bohusläns museum i Uddevalla
Den ser ut att ha varit med om en del, den lurviga lilla nallen, ungefär 20 centimeter lång. Färgen har blekts och den luddiga, mjuka pälsen är på vissa ställen nästan vit. Ursprungligen hade nallen ett vackert band runt halsen, tillverkat i tunt vitt material med rosa kanter och blommor. Det var knutet som en rosett, men så småningom föll det av.
Marie, flickan som fick nallen, hade ingen avundsvärd uppväxt. Hon och hennes bror föddes i Stockholm i mitten av 1950-talet. Föräldrarna arbetade inom restaurangbranschen. Maries pappa var kock, mamman servitris. Den lilla familjen hade kunnat bli ett fint exempel på en lycklig kärnfamilj i en tid då framtiden för Sverige såg ljus ut. På 1950 - och 1960-talen var arbetslösheten nästan obefintlig. Det gick så bra för svensk industri att man var tvungen att importera arbetskraft från Finland och Sydeuropa. Maries mamma var en av de många som invandrade från Finland.
Detta var tiden då svenskarna skaffade bil, åkte på utlandssemester, investerade i tvättmaskin och köpte tv. De första tv-sändningarna ägde rum 1956, året då Marie föddes. Men familjelyckan bestod inte. Fadern var alkoholist och skilsmässan blev snart ett faktum. Mamman fick, med sin ynkliga servitrislön, försörja sig och de späda barnen på egen hand. Hon tvingades slita hårt på sena kvällar och helger. Servitriser efterfrågas ofta när andra är lediga och vill gå på lokal, och en servitris tjänar bättre när arbetstiden är obekväm. Och pengarna behövdes.
Det skulle dröja länge innan man började diskutera kommunal barnpassning om kvällarna. Sådant förväntades man klara själv, med hjälp av släktingar, vänner eller inhyrda barnvakter. Ibland kom en flicka och passade Marie - som bara var några månader gammal - och hennes två år äldre bror, men inte alltid. Barnen var ofta ensamma hemma. Om de ätit, tvättats och nattats räknade man med att de skulle ligga stilla och säkra i sina sängar och somna, även om ingen vuxen fanns i närheten. Idag skulle detta betraktas som något oerhört, men för några decennier sedan var det ingen som höjde på ögonbrynen över situationen.
Sedan kom dråpslaget mot den bräckliga familjen. Mamman blev akut sjuk och hamnade på sjukhus. Ingen kunde ta hand om barnen. Pappan kunde man inte räkna med och morföräldrarna bodde i Finland. Konsekvensen blev att de placerades på barnhem. Ännu visste ingen att familjen aldrig skulle återförenas, men så blev det. Mamman kämpade för att få hem sina barn - hon försökte skaffa en större lägenhet och ordna en permanent barnflicka - men misslyckades. Idag hade hon antagligen fått större stöd från samhället, men vid denna tid var det ingen som grep in och hjälpte till. Barnens farföräldrar, som hade en optikerbutik i Norrtälje, försökte bli godkända som fosterföräldrar. Utredningen pågick i tre år och Marie hann bli sex innan farföräldrarna slutligen fick avslag. De ansågs »ej lämpliga på grund av att de var tattare«. Alltså skickades barnen mellan barnhem, fosterhem och sommarhem. Marie har räknat ut att de flyttade sjutton gånger.
Mitt i detta rotlösa liv, med förflyttningar, bannor, hårda nypor och otrygghet infann sig den fasta punkten. Den bestod av den mjuka, varma, rosa nallen att slå armarna om på kvällen och borra in ansiktet i. Nallen är en flicka, av Marie kallad just Nalle. Dit Marie gick, gick också Nalle. När Marie pratade lyssnade Nalle. När Marie behövde någon att krama fanns Nalle.
Den söta rosettprydda Nalle kom in i den barnhemsplacerade flickans liv när hon var sju år. Just då fanns snälla tant Eva på barnhemmet. Hon var inte som de andra utan verkade tycka om barnen. Lilla Marie älskade Eva och kärleken var besvarad. Emellertid fick den ett abrupt slut. Det drog ihop sig till sommar, Marie skulle skickas på sommarhem och även Eva skulle åka bort. Innan de skildes åt kom Eva med Nalle som en present till Marie. Hon lovade att vinka av flickan, men när de skulle åka iväg infann hon sig inte. De andra i personalen sade att Eva redan åkt. De återsågs aldrig, men Evas rosa Nalle blev Maries trogna följeslagare under åren som följde.
Det har skrivits mycket om barnhems- och fosterhemsplacerade barn på 1900-talet. Idag är de vuxna, och alltför många av dem kan vittna om övergrepp, pennalism, kroppsbestraffningar, förflyttningar och kärlekslöshet. Staten lyckades inte bra i sina försök att ta hand om dessa de mest värnlösa i folkhemmet. Det som hade kunnat vara goda lösningar för pojkar och flickor som inte kunde tas om hand av sina föräldrar urartade många gånger till en mardrömslik uppväxt som satte djupa och smärtande spår. Marie berättar att hon blev bra på att läsa av de vuxna, att alltid vara på sin vakt och ständigt vara beredd på att få en örfil.
För Marie och hennes bror fanns en till synes självklar utväg inom räckhåll, men den förvägrades dem. De hade mycket väl kunnat få en annan uppväxt, om bara myndigheterna låtit det ske. Deras mor ville ha dem tillbaka och ansträngde sig, men hon fick ingen hjälp och gav till slut upp. Farföräldrarnas önskan att ta sig an barnen uppfylldes inte eftersom de var av resandesläkt. Att de ägde en butik och hade ett stabilt hem vägde lätt i sammanhanget. Man kan förledas att tro att detta var längesedan, men det var i början av 1960-talet. Ur ett historiskt perspektiv är detta händelser som nyss utspelat sig.
När ingen annan fanns blev Nalle familjen. Hon har hängt med ända sedan den dag Marie fick henne i sin famn. När Marie blivit myndig och äntligen kunde besluta om sitt eget liv började hon arbeta som sjuksköterska, men Nalle stoppades inte undan utan sattes bekvämt i bokhyllan. Förutom lilla Nalle finns det en annan ljusglimt i den mörka historien, som annars mest vittnar om brist på barnperspektiv. Trots de många flyttarna fick Marie och hennes bror växa upp tillsammans.
Historien om Nalle och Marie är inte bara en historia om fosterhems-placeringar. Den utgör också ett vittnesmål om hur samhället har sett på romer, tidigare kallade zigenare, och resande, ofta hänvisade till som tattare. Man har betraktat båda grupperna med misstankens ogina ögon. Det enda skäl som angavs när farföräldrarnas önskemål fick avslag var att de var tattare. De ansågs inte för gamla eller för fattiga, inte heller föra en tillvaro som var opassande för barn. De var tattare, alltså skulle de inte ta hand om sina barnbarn. Det ansågs bättre om barnen hamnade i en främmande, men mer »äktsvensk«, familj eller slussades runt mellan olika hem.
Resande och romer har en lång historia i Sverige, men den lyfts sällan fram. Skälen är många. Äldre historieskrivning har kraftigt fokuserat på politik och framträdande personer, i regel män. Det har handlat om krig, landvinningar eller förluster, kungar och deras familjer, kanske även om vetenskapsmän och deras framsteg. Det är många som inte har platsat: kvinnor, gamla, barn, invandrare, handikappade, fattiga, alkoholister, missbrukare och alla som bara varit helt vanliga och alldagliga människor. Därtill kommer att historien om resande och romer är allt annat än smickrande för svensk del. Romer har förföljts i århundraden, särskilt sedan 1500- och 1600-talen, då de förbjöds att överhuvudtaget vistas i landet. Den som bröt mot regeln riskerade dödsstraff. Romer och resande anklagades ideligen för att ägna sig åt brottslighet och skumraskaffärer.
Bilden har varit svår att tvätta bort. Alltför ofta stöter man fortfarande på den. Först under de senaste decennierna har något börjat hända. Många svenska barn växte upp med böckerna om Katitzi, skrivna av Katarina Taikon, och fick en annan bild av romer än den hävdvunna. Katitzi var ett barn att identifiera sig med. Romer och resande har också organiserat sig och sett till att få inflytande. De räknas idag som en nationell minoritet i Sverige. Gruppernas kultur och språk har börjat intressera också utomstående. I kölvattnet av utvecklingen har man fört in deras kultur i museivärlden.
Och det är där lilla Nalle har hamnat. Numera sitter hon i en monter på Bohusläns museum i Uddevalla, med de bruna glaspärleögonen milt blickande på besökarna. Museet är det första i landet som har en permanent utställning om resandefolket. Här visas bland annat föremål som grävts ut i Snarsmon i norra Bohuslän, en plats som under lång tid har brukats av resande. Nallen, och de andra sakerna, är lämningar efter ett Sverige som det länge har varit kutym att förakta och osynliggöra."
