In 1989 we connected from Telemark Ingeniørhøgskole, Norway through Internet (predecessor of internet) in order to use this particular Connection Machine. We made testruns of some mathematical calculations for gas explotions which included large matrices.

The programs was uploaded to a frontend server (Sun OS as far as I recall) where they where compiled for sending intructions to the CM which could take up to 8192 parallel instructions.

For our programs it was no major success, so we still had to lease computing capacities on Cray... though I remember this as a very interesting initiative.

  • Thank you for your very interesting comment! Kind regards, Jenny
