När Nationalmuseum började använda röntgen för att ”titta under ytan” på konstverk blev detta uppmärksammat i vetenskapliga artiklar. Verksamheten i Sverige var bland de första i världen att använda röntgenteknik för analyser av konst, i första hand målningar. Till en början, på 1930-talet, gjordes detta hos Karolinska institutet i samarbete med en läkare. Från 1950-talets mitt hade museet tillgång till egen utrustning vilken även användes utomlands för att sprida kunskapen om röntgenundersökningar.
Utrustningen placerades på vagnar för att göra den transportabel. Den använde sedan i utställningssalar för röntgenfotografering av verk och röntgenkällan riktades uppåt. Vid fotografering sattes ett blad röntgenfilm bakom det stycke av verket som skulle röntgas och exponeras.
När museet byggdes till med lokaler för konservering och administration i en flygel mot Museikajen, inköptes en utrustning som användes stationärt och ett rum inreddes för att betrakta genomlysningar av konst. Lokalen låg i anslutning till fotoateljéerna och hade rum för framkallning av röntgenfilm. Utrustningen är ett tidigt exempel på användning av röntgen inom analys av måleri och är tillverkad av svenska Schönander.
