Förlagan till denna modell, loket Rocket (Raketen), byggdes vid Robert Stephensons verkstäder i Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Troligen var det Robert Stephenson själv som stod för konstruktionen. Beställare var hans far, George, som var byggnadschef på Liverpool - Manchesterbanan.
Rocket var det enda lok som kunde fullfölja tävlingens hela provprogram, och blev därmed den självklara segraren. Efter segern var det fadern, George Stephenson, som tog åt sig äran.
Rocket hade tekniska lösningar som sedan kom att användas i många ånglok: För det första leddes de heta rödgaserna genom ångpannan i rör - tuber. Därigenom blev upphettningsytan större och pannan effektivare. Vidare hade loket direkt drivning på hjulen - inte via krångliga hävstänger eller kugghjul som konkurrenterna. Slutligen leddes avloppsångan ut genom skorstenen, vilket ökade draget i pannan.
Rocket kom att användas i lättare tåg på Liverpool - Manchesterbanan fram till 1834. Det sparades och står idag på Science Museum i London.
I England fanns det i början på 1800-talet många banor för godstrafik. Dragkraften var oftast hästar, men man provade också många ånglokskonstruktioner. 1828 började man bygga den första järnvägen för allmän trafik mellan två större städer, Liverpool och Manchester.
När järnvägen började bli färdig 1829 hade man ännu inte avgjort vilken dragkraft man skulle ha i tågen. Det talades om hästar och stationära ångmaskiner som med linor skulle dra tågen. Och det talades om lokomotiv, men dessa var ännu inte helt färdigutvecklade.
Man beslöt sig för att utlysa en tävling, där de olika lokkonstruktörerna skulle få visa upp sina maskiner. Bäste man skulle få ett pris på 500 pund, och få bygga lok till banan. Loken skulle vara snabba som vinden, gå i minst 16 km/t och de skulle kunna dra tre gånger sin egen vikt. Man ställde också krav på vikt, fjädring och säkerhetsventiler.
Många var intresserade, men när tävlingen började i oktober 1829 fanns bara fem lok på plats. De övriga hade inte hunnit bli färdiga. Bara två tävlande klarade kraven. Det var Rocket och Novelty. Det hästdrivna loket Cykloped uppfyllde inte tävlingens krav. Och Perseverance klarade inte hastigheten. Sans Pareil var för tung, men fick deltaga utan chans att vinna. Innan tävlingen var slut gick Ericssons lok sönder och vinnare blev Rocket. Det var helt rättvist. Rocket kom att bli anfader till de flesta senare ånglokomotiv.
Modellen av tävlingen är uppförd i skala 1:16 av f.d. Banmuseet i Ängelholm. Den visar en liten bit av den drygt två kilometer långa provsträckan i Rainhill. Järnvägen och vägbron över banan finns ännu kvar. Idag ligger där en station för lokaltåg. Där åskådarläktarna stod 1829, har det uppförts ett bostadsområde. En liten bit därifrån finns ett litet museum där bland annat en av Noveltys cylindrar finns.
