American Optical Company (AO) bildades 1826 i Southbridge, Massachusetts av William Beecher. Redan 1905 hade de vuxit sig stora nog för att öppna ett kontor i London. Under båda världskrigen tillverkade de glasögon, skyddglasögon och linser till den amerikanska försvarsmakten. 1940 började AO tillverka polariserade solglasögon till allmänheten, ungefär samtidigt som Bausch & Lomb började sälja sina polariserade solglasögon under märket Ray-Ban. AOs mest populära glaslinser var “True Color” (grå) och Cosmetan (bruna). AOs glasögonbågar, linser och solglasögon blev väldigt populära under 1950- till 1970-talen. Företaget specialiserade sig på att tillverka vanliga glasögonbågar till både män, kvinnor och barn. Produkterna tillverkades i Southbridge, Massachusetts, och blev populära i Sverige under 1940- och 1950-talen.
