Gardinomtaget kommer från den kungliga väntsalen i Malmö. Den första väntsalen 1876-1890 var endast på 25 kvm. Den nya inreddes 1896 på dubbla ytan för kung Oscar II och försågs med ett entrérum (från gatan) och ett kungligt damrum med toalett. 1925 skedde en renovering och begränsad ombyggnad av den kungliga väntsalen. Då revs en kakelugn och lokalerna erhöll centralvärme. Nästa stora renovering ägde rum 1994. I samband med detta renoverades en del av möblerna och järnvägsmuseet fick förfrågan att stå som ägare till möblerna och låta deponera dem i Malmö.
År 2011 lät Hovet meddela Jernhusen att de inte längre hade något behov av väntsalen. Gardinomtaget och möblerna skickades till järnvägsmuseet 2013, förutom en spegel med konsolbord och ett par takarmaturer som fortsatte att vara deponerade där. Det har även funnits en kunglig väntsal i Vagnhärad och en på Stockholm C. I Sveriges Järnvägsmuseums samlingar finns äldre möbler som har stått i den kungliga väntsalen på Stockholm C.
