Tuban har använts av Järnvägsmännens Musikkår i Malmö, som startades 1949 av några järnvägsanställda i Malmö. Från början hette kåren Järnvägsmännens Musikkår, senare bytte man namn till SJ Musikkår. Sina första övningar hade kåren i en kurslokal i Ilgodsmagasinet i Malmö, och sedan dess - faktiskt enda fram till bolagiseringen av SJ- övade man i olika lokaler på SJ:s område. Efter bolagiseringen tvingades kåren flytta och klara sig själv. Så småningom slog man sig samman med Öresunds Sjövärnskår, och heter idag Öresunds Musikkår.
Flera olika musikkårer har funnits inom järnvägen genom åren. Exempelvis hade Järnvägsmännens helnykterhetsförening en egen musikkår så tidigt som 1902. Musikkårernas uniformer var de vanliga järnvägsuniformerna som man oftast fick köpa till nedsatt pris och senare låna från SJ. På vänster ärm bar man en symbol i form av en gyllene lyra.
Musikkårerna höll konserter både inom och utom landet, men spelade även på högtidligheter av olika slag - till exempel vid invigningen av eldrift på olika järnvägssträckor. 2017 fanns bara en kår kvar i Sverige: Svenska Järnvägars Musikkår i Stockholm som startades 1924.
