Lämningarna efter kyrkan i Getakärr sedermera Gamleby / Gamla Varberg provundersöktes 1925, och undersöktes i sin helhet 1937-38 av Albert Sandklef, Varbergs museum.
Varbergs stadsfullmäktige ställde år 1936, 4000:- till förfogande. Arbetet genomfördes som nödhjälpsarbete genom drätselkammaren.
Förutom ruinerna efter kyrkan med anslutande helgeandshus påträffades 280 gravar.
Bebyggelsen på Getakärr (Varberg RAÄ 60:1) finns omnämnd från ca 1200-talets mitt. Getakärr hade urban karaktär från 1300-talet och hade så fram till 1578 då stadsprivilegierna drogs in.
Getakärr låg i nuvarande Varbergs norra del. Från 1400-talet kom Getakärr att benämnas Varberg liksom den närbelägna borgen. Efter det att Ny Varberg några km åt norr etablerades ca 1430 kom namnet att bli Gamleby eller Gamla Varberg.
