Henry Buergel Goodwin föddes i München och var en tysk-svensk fotograf. År 1903 doktorerade han i språkvetenskap i Leipzig. År 1904 kom han till Sverige för att arbeta som språklektor vid Uppsala Universitet. Han gick till Uppsala Fotografi förening och deltog på deras utställning år 1907 med porträtt av språkmän från den egna institutionen.
Goodwin arbetade från år 1909 under några år som lexikograf hos P.A. Norstedt & Söner. Han var även engagerad botanist och ägnade sig åt trädgårdsodling och blomsterfotografering. Goodwin debuterade år 1912 som skribent i fotosammanhang i yrkesfotografernas Svenska Fotografen. På hans publicerade bilder stod det alltid 'Kamerabild av Goodwin', eftersom han ansåg att en kamerabild var något mer än ett vanligt, simpelt fotografi.
Han inrättade, tillsammans med sin hustru Ida, en privat salong på Strandvägen 7B, där de kunder som var mest intressanta uppvaktades med bildat samtal över tebrickan innan porträtteringen startade. Goodwin öppnade sin Stockholmsateljé Kamerabilden år 1915, där kända konstnärer, författare och skådespelare stod modell. Han var med i flera samlingsutställningar och ställde ut enskilt i Köpenhamn, London och New York.
År 1929 kom Goodwin ut med boken Kamerabilden som nästan blev som en bibel för dåtidens fotoentusiaster. Porträtt av till exempel Greta Garbo och Jenny Hasselblad uppmärksammades även utomlands. Goodwin, Hertzberg, Ture Sellman, Uno Falkengren, Ivar Thulin och Ivar Nordlund bildade år 1916 Nordisk Tidskrift för Fotografi. Henry B. Goodwin var medlem i Svenska Fotografernas Förbund och ledamot i styrelsen. Han finns representerad i Kungliga bibliotekets porträttfotografregister.
