Ingenjören och uppfinnaren Arvid Gerhard Damm hade med broder Ivar Damm konstruerat maskiner för kryptering med rotorprincipen. På denna grund bildade Arvid Damm företaget AB Cryptograph år 1916. Karl Wilhelm Hagelin gick in som delägare i verksamheten och dennes son ingenjören Boris Hagelin anställdes vid företaget 1922. När Arvid Damm flyttade till Paris 1925 tog Boris Hagelin över ledningen. Damms konstruktioner blev under Hagelins ledning säljbara krypteringsmaskiner.
