Richard Birkeland var fetter av Kristian Birkeland. Richard Birkeland var professor i matematikk ved Norges Tekniske Høyskole fra skolen ble etablert og bygde opp matematikkfaget der. Han var rektor ved Norges Tekniske Høyskole fra 1920 til 1923. Birkeland vokste opp i Farsund, og etter middelskoleeksamen der begynte han på bygningsavdelingen ved Kristiania Tekniske skole, og tok eksamen 1899. Det var Elling Holsts undervisning der som vakte hans interesse for matematikk. Han begynte som ingeniør i Statens Veivesen, og var med på bro- og veiarbeider mange steder i landet, og på oppbyggingen av Hydros anlegg på Rjukan og Notodden.
