Willem Claesz. Heda (1594–1680/82, holländsk)
Måltidsstycke, 1649
På ett bord med en vit damastduk är en måltid uppdukad med tennkanna, tennfat och vinglas. Vinet är upphällt, njurpajen är påbörjad, liksom brödet, och här finns exotiska frukter som en vindruvsklase med delar av bladverket kvar, några oliver och två persikor. Målningen ger oss illusionen av att vara verklig. Titta på fatet med persikorna, som skjuter ut över bordskanten, så att vi nästan kan ta i det. Verket är utfört av den holländske målaren Willem Claesz. Heda, som var verksam i Haarlem, och har titeln ”Måltidsstycke”. Tillsammans med konstnären Pieter Claez (ca 1598–1661) utvecklade han måltidsstycket som genre under 1630-talet.
I Hedas stilleben har detaljerna underordnats helheten, en gråbrun ton genomsyrar målningen och spelet mellan ljus och skugga är väl genomarbetat. Denna stillebentyp brukar kallas för det toniga måltidsstycket. Förmodligen kopplat till kalvinismen och en mera nedtonad livshållning. Till skillnad från den katolska kyrkan var kalvinismen ikonoklastisk (bildfientlig) och ville inte ha bilder i samband med Gudsdyrkan. Medan det i Flandern var fursten eller kyrkan som utgjorde de stora uppdragsgivarna, var det i Holland främst det framväxande borgerskapet som köpte konst till husbehov. Men det värdsliga motivet i måltidsstycket skall inte enbart ses som ett tecken för välstånd. Här finns också en moralisk symbolik, där till exempel brödet och vinet associerar till nattvarden och Kristi sista måltid. Motivet kan också ses som en påminnelse om livets förgänglighet: snart är pajen kall, vinet surt och brödet torrt…

Måltidsstycket
På ett bord med en välstruken [kallpressad] damastduk, i Willem Claez Hedas (1594-ca 1680) Måltidstycke, visas olika föremål, tennkanna, tennfat och vinglas och centralt i bilden en paj, som man har skurit i, samt vindruvor, nötter och aprikoser i ett centralperspektiv som understryks genom att fatet skjuter ut över bordet.
Måltidsstycket utvecklades kring 1630-talet och genren skapades av två mästare i Haarlem, i Holland, Pieter Claesz (ca 1598–1661) och Willem Cleasz Heda. Den sistnämnde är representerad med ett stilleben i Johnsonsamlingen, daterat 1649.
Willem Claesz Heda byggde nästan alltid upp sin bild på samma sätt. Bilden är i breddformat och centralt i bilden återfinns en platt tårta eller paj kring vilken resten av framställningen arrangeras. Runtom står flera flata tenntallrikar som understryker horisontalverkan och ger en välbalanserad komposition. Heda tog fasta på den utveckling som skett inom perspektivets område och komponerade sina bilder utifrån centralperspektivet samt byggde upp en harmonisk bild utifrån en helhetston där han lät ljuset spela med de olika föremålen.
Tidigare hade man målat stilleben med föremålen ganska stelt bredvid och på varandra mot en bordsyta som sågs ovanifrån, med många detaljer i klara färger och utan att ta hänsyn till ljusets inverkan. I Hedas stilleben har istället detaljerna underordnats helheten, en gråbrun ton genomsyrar målningen i ett intrikat spel med ljuset. Denna stillebentyp brukar benämnas det toniga måltidsstycket. Det fanns förmodligen en tanke med det. Grått ansågs vara den filosofiska färgen och passade de holländska kalvinistiska renlevnadsmänniskorna väl.
Holland blev huvudprovins för den kalvinistiska trosinriktningen år 1579 och i samband med det fick konsten en nationell prägel. Typiskt för den nya republiken blev borgerligheten och den reformerta kyrkan i motsats till det katolska och motreformerta Flandern där adeln härskade. Konsten i Holland blev därför borgerlig, intim och återhållsam om än dyrbar. Det sparsmakade passade kyrkan. Eftersom den var ikonoklastisk (bildfientlig) och inte ville ha bilder i samband med Gudsdyrkan, blev den religiösa konsten föga utbredd. Borgerskapet hade med de samhällsekonomiska omvälvningarna blivit en kapitalstark och ivrig konstköpare. Detta underlättades dessutom av att stafflimåleriet på duk och panna hade vunnit sitt intåg. I Holland gick borgaren till konstnären eller konsthandlaren och köpte konst till husbehov. I Flandern gav fursten eller kyrkan istället konstnären i uppdrag att utföra ett bestämt verk, ofta monumentalmålningar, vars innehåll bestämdes av beställaren.
Det till synes värdsliga motivet måltidsstycken ska inte enbart ses som ett tecken på välstånd. Det kunde som allting annat ha en moralisk innebörd och varna betraktaren för att alltför mycket hänge sig åt bordets njutningar. Man kan läsa in en rad symboler i holländska stilleben, av vilka många var religiösa och i Hedas bild kan brödet och vinet alludera på Kristi sista måltid. Förgängelsemotivet fanns också nästan alltid närvarande på ett eller annat sätt, t ex genom maskstungna eller ruttnande frukter. Här kan den avslutade måltiden med den påbörjade pajen ses som ett förgängelsemotiv. (Detta brukar kallas för Vanitasmotiv). Snart är pajen kall, vinet surt och brödet torrt...

- History
John Johnson föddes i Naverstad i Bohuslän år 1861. Han gick på Uddevalla elementarläroverk. Flyttade därefter till Göteborg för att ägna sig åt affärverksamhet, främst vinhandel. Det var under denna tid som han skaffade sig en betydande förmögenhet.
År 1885 gifte sig John Johnson med Ingeborg Josefina Klemenson, född 1859 i Fredrikstad. Paret fick sönerna John Arne och Reidar Ring.
Mellan åren 1904 och 1928 bodde familjen Johnson i huvudsakligen i Stockholm med några kortare avbrott.
Från 1928 är Villa Hemmet i Ulricehamn paret Johnsons hem.
Fru Ingeborg Johnson avlider redan år 1932. John Johnson dör i november 1951.
Konstverken JJ01 - JJ67 utgör John Johnsons donation till Uddevalla stad genom testamente och utgör merparten av de tavlor han samlat sedan 1890-talet.
