Maria Bortas 1891-1970
Maria Bortas blev synonym med den livskraftiga kvalitetsslöjden i Leksand under årtiondena närmast efter andra världskriget. Särskilt beundrades de daldrällar som vävdes under hennes tid på Leksands Hemslöjd.
Maria var född i Hagens by i Häradsbygden, Leksand och intresserade sig tidigt för vävning och hemslöjd. Hon utbildade sig vidare på Fornby folkhögskola, Borlänge och Johanna Brunssons klassiska vävskola i Stockholm.
Leksands Hemslöjd 1929 – 1960
Efter nio år som vävlärarinna i Småland återvände Maria till Leksand 1929 som biträde i butiken och 1932 utsågs hon till föreståndare. När Dalarnas Hemslöjdsförbund bildades 1937 tillhörde hon dess första styrelseuppsättning och hon kvarstod i styrelsen fram till 1966.
Till att börja med drevs rörelsen på kommission, men under Marias ledning reducerades denna typ av försäljning. Hon ansåg att Hemslöjden själv skulle bestämma kvalitéer och mönster. Slöjdarna fick infinna sig i butiken och fick då material och mönster. Hemslöjdens ekonomi utvecklades betydligt under hennes tid.
