Ordet ultramarin betyder ungefär "som ligger på andra sidan havet". Färgen användes av konstnärer under medeltiden men var känd redan ännu tidigare. Den kunde utvinnas ur mineralet lapis lazuli som var mycket sällsynt och därför blev färgpriset mycket högt. Pulveriserad och slammad användes den dyrbara färgen främst i kyrkokonst. På grund av priset var den tillgänglig endast för välbärgade personer. Namnet ultramarin var passande eftersom mineralet hämtades med fartyg bortom haven. Syntetisk ultramarinblå färg började så småningom användas på tapeter och de första med mönster i kulören var dyra och exklusiva. De blev därför snabbt en statussymbol och att ha dem hemma på sina väggar visade på välstånd. I början när priset på ultramarin var högt användes den oftast endast på trycket. Helstruken botten förekom först när syntetisk ultramarin blev billigare. Under mitten av 1800-talet blev ultramarin en modefärg och en stor del av tapeterna hade mönster med denna. Det som från början hade varit en statussymbol blev då tillgängligt för gemene man och färgens popularitet framgår tydligt i museets tapetsamling. I den finns många exempel på tapetbitar med flera tapetlager där åtminstone ett av dem har mönster med den lysande färgen. I museets samling förekommer tapeter med ultramarin daterade från 1840-talet fram till 1890-talet.
