Johan August Pettersson, vanligen kallad John, föddes den 28 augusti 1863 i Lerbäcks socken i Örebro län. Hans far var torpare och gjorde tre dagsverken vid Skyllbergs bruk. Den övriga tiden var han nubbesmed tillsammans med en bror.
Pettersson började arbeta i faderns smedja i 7-årsåldern. Det blev under de närmaste åren hans dagliga sysselsättning – endast avbrutet av torvbrytning på somrarna. Tidens skolsystem gjorde att han fick en mycket enkel och kort utbildning. Under tonåren växlade han mellan olika kropps-arbeten som jordbruksarbete, körning av malm och järn med oxe, smide, sommardräng, och dikesgrävning.
Efter denna period sökte Pettersson sig in till Örebro och fick där en tjänst som vaktmästare på stadshotellet, följt av arbeten inom telegraflinjebygge, kanalbygge, järnvägsarbete, torvtillverkning, vagnssmide, och verkstadsarbetare på en rad firmor.
År 1893 gifte han sig med Klara Lovisa Söderström, född 1864 i Viby, Örebro län. Ett år senare föddes enda barnet Einar.
Johan August Pettersson började driva tidnings- och cigarraffär i Eskilstunatrakten 1898. Den 30 augusti 1906 flyttade familjen till Enköping där Pettersson övertog en affär på Kungsgatan 16, ”Enköpings Cigarr- & Tobakshandel”. Ett år senare öppnade han en filial på Kyrkogatan 24 vid torget. Så snart sonen Einar avslutat skolan kom den butiken att skötas av Einar ända till dess att den stängde vid mitten av 1960-talet. Själv drev han butiken på Kungsgatan fram tills 1930 då den såldes.
Den samling fotografier som Enköpings museum innehar efter ”Cigarr-Pelle” innehåller dels familje- och släktbilder och dels bilder av dokumentär karaktär. I de senare skildras t.ex. demonstrationståg, militärtrupper på genomresor, musikgrupper, festligheter och händelser i Folkets Park.
Johan dog den 28 april 1958, 94 år gammal.
