Efter genombrottet för den fotografiska tekniken 1839, spreds den nya möjligheten att skapa bilder över världen. Till en början var det en svår teknik och möjligheterna för gemene man att fotografera var begränsade. Med kompaktare kameror och kopierbara negativ blev fotografiet ett medium för alla vid förra sekelskiftet . Tekniken har alltid varit en avgörande del i hur vi kan fotografera och ibland har den även fått en egen roll i bilden. Här visar vi en några fotografier ur samlingarna, där kameror och/eller fotograferandet/fotografen är i en viktig del av motivet.
I några av bilderna här nedan används kameran som ren rekvisita vid porträttfotografering, för att skapa intresse i en bild, som inte har fotografering som huvudmotiv och där modellen, kanske inte ens kan fotografera: KW Gullers använder sin Rolliflex, för en av fåglarna att sitta på när han ska fotografera på Ultuna Fjäderfälaboratorium i Uppsala, skådespelarna Gunnar Wiklund och Lena Söderblom poserar bakom en av teamets tv-kameror i spexiga attribut , som en hatt med kran och inbyggt snapsglas på brättet när man från Sallstedts bildbyrå gör reportage om en filminspelning och i Gunnar Lundhs bild på en fotomodell i röd kappa, ger kameran en känsla av att vi fått följa med på en höstutflykt.
I Nordiska museets insamlingsarbete har de dokumentära fotografiet haft en central roll sedan start och många tjänstemän har aktivt fotograferat i fält i tjänsten, Ernst Maker och Gösta Berg är bara några exempel. Man anställde även tidigt skickliga fotografer för heltidsarbete med fotografering av samlingar och verksamhet Märta Claréus och Olof Ekberg syns i galleriet här . Våra arkiv innehåller efterlämnade självporträtt och porträtt av flera av 1900-talets välkända reportagefotografer, som Kerstin Bernhard, KW Gullers, Sten Didrik Bellander, Hans Malmberg och Tore Johnson, där kameran är en ständig följeslagare i bild, också i de bilder där fotografen inte primärt arbetar.
