Kex av detta slaget såldes också i enklare pappersförpackning; kunde ätas som tilltugg vid kaffestunder.
Saxat ur programmet "Släktband" i Sveriges Radio P1 i januari 2006 som handlade om skottar invandrade till Västsverige.
Den skotska familjen Cruickshank kom till Sverige år 1888. De bosatte sig i Kungälv och var delaktiga i starten av fabriken Göteborgs Kex. Familjen bestod av Robert och Margaret Allison Blair McKimmie Cruickshank samt fyra söner och en dotter.
Ättlingarna och bröderna David och Tomas Hedberg berättade om sin anfader som kom hit med två kexrecept på fickan, ett sött och ett salt. Det söta blev Mariekex och bildade basen för en hel industri. Det salta kexet gick under benämningen Albert.
Kanske var det också familjen som lärde arbetarna på kexfabriken att spela fotboll. Det berättas att man slet ut kläderna på det nya spelet. Officiellt pratar man om att det var i Göteborg år 1892 som man först i landet spelade fotboll.
När Robert Cruickshank vid 51 års ålder kom hem från fabriken en lunch satte han sig ner, tog en klunk whiskey och drog ett bloss på cigarren. Sedan sa han till sin son: "John I'm fainting". Därefter satte han ned glaset och dog. Änkan Allison Blair McKimmie Cruickshank levde fram till 1906 .

Orsaken till familjen Cruickshanks flytt till Sverige var att skeppsredaren och affärsmannen Carl Leopold Berggren i Göteborg ansåg att det borde finnas en marknad för svensktillverkade kex. Han var gift med en engelska och var därför van vid att det serverades kex till både te, sherry och portvin. Och i Göteborg fanns det gott om köpmän med brittiskt härkomst som importerade kex och sålde dem vidare till Stockholm och andra städer. Ett problem var att det i Sverige inte fanns lämpliga bagerimaskiner eller yrkeskunnigt folk. Berggren sökte därför via sina engelska affärsbekanta kontakt med någon kexkunnig person. Dessa kontakter informerade honom om att de hittat en lämplig person vid namn Robert Cruickshank från Glasgow. Den 29 oktober 1887 skriver Robert Cruickshank det första brevet till C. L. Berggren. Brevet från oktober 1887 följdes av en mängd brevkontakter och en Sverigeresa för Robert, som till slut resulterade i att Robert inköpte bagerimaskiner och förutom sin familj även tog med sig tre skickliga kexbagare och naturligtvis de livsviktiga kexrecepten. I ett brev av den 16 maj 1888 gjorde man också upp om lönevillkoren (£ 300 Sterling per år eller ca 5 600 kronor i den då aktuella valutakursen) och Roberts del av aktiekapitalet (25 000 kronor eller 17 % av aktiekapitalet). Göteborgs Kex Fabrik AB registrerades den 19 april 1888 med ett aktiekapital av totalt 143 000 kronor.
I början av juni 1888 kom alltså familjen Cruickshank till Kungälv. I sällskapet fanns också tre bageriarbetare från Skottland. För deras första tid i Kungälv fanns fyra hotellrum bokade med åtta sängar till en kostnad av 6 kronor per dag.
Bygget av den nya fabriken startade i april 1888 och var klart redan i november samma år.
Fabriken, som var uppförd i rött tegel, hade ugnar, kexmaskiner, ångpanna och ångmaskin på bottenvåningen. På andra våningen fanns packsal och på vindsvåningen lager av mjöl och socker. Degblandare, valsar och en stämpelmaskin drevs via remmar från ångmaskinen. Två koleldade kedjeugnar drevs också av ångmaskinen.
Den 13 december 1888 var driften igång på Göteborgs Kexfabrik AB - det var dags för det första kexbaket.
En Kungälvsbo som var med vid tillfället berättar följande:
-Jag minns väl det första baket - det var två dagar efter det jag fyllt 15 år. Det skedde i en av handugnarna. Cruickshank såg efter att allt gick rätt till. Man skulle baka "Butter Nuts". Av de andra skottarna skötte John Smith valsen och Charles Docherty såg till handstämplingen. En tredje skotte - William Mason - hade hand om en annan del av arbetet. Kavlingen skedde på ett stort björkbord, stämplingen för hand med rörstans av bleck, importerad från England. Cruickshank var mycket spänd på hur det första baket skulle gå. När han gick fram för att smaka och fann att han lyckats, sken han upp, skrattade och ville att vi alla skulle ta för oss och smaka. Han kunde inte svenska utan ropade ''Hello boys'', pekade på de färdiga kexen i backarna, på munnen, tuggade och pekade på våra fickor, för att vi skulle förstå att det var fri förtäring.

Recepten kom med största säkerhet från Roberts mammas receptsamling från 1835. I den hittar man receptet på Macaroons:
- Blanch your Almonds, and dry them well, then pound them with the same weight of Sugar as Almonds, and put them throgh a sieve when thus prepared you may keep a stock by you, and mix such quantities as you want with whites of eggs into a light paste, drop them upon wafer paper, put a little sugar over them, and bake in a slow oven. 2/- per lb.
Det finns information om att det första kexet som bakades den 13 december 1888 var Marie. Om de båda kexen Albert och Marie berättades följande historia i de efterkommande generationerna. Sanning om kexen Albert och Marie - eller en skröna?
"TÄNK OM MARIEKEXET HAFT NAMNET ALEXANDROVNA!
Två kex som tillverkades från första dagen på Kungälvs Kexfabrik var Albert och Marie. Mariekexet är en typisk svensk produkt, tycker nog de flesta av oss. Men ursprunget är egentligen engelskt och ryskt.
Mariekexet fick sitt namn efter storfurstinnan Maria Alexandrovna av Ryssland, som 1874 gifte sig med drottning Victorias son Alfred. Kexet Albert döptes efter drottningens make.
Båda kexen blev snabbt mycket omtyckta i England och recepten spreds till andra länder, bland annat till Sverige och Kungälv med hjälp av Robert Cruickshank. Men tänk om man hade tagit med sig en kexrulle GuldAlexandrovna på utflykten istället för GuldMarie.
