Drakseglet fick Rudolf Aust i början 1950-talet av sin morfar Richard Berlin som bodde på Långedrag i västra Göteborg. Morfadern köpte det helt nya seglet till barnbarnet. Föräldrarna stammade från Långedrag där man bodde sommartid men familjen var vintertid bosatt i Östersund där Rudolfs far var överläkare.
Drakseglet användes på Storsjön under gymnasietiden. Tillfällena var tyvärr inte så många eftersom sjön fort täcktes av ett tjockt snölager. Senare, under studietiden i Uppsala bjöds flera tillfällen då sjön Eklon söder om staden ofta bjöd på långa perioder av seglingsbar is.
Se även sv/v fotografi på ägaren med sitt segel på omslaget till Nationsbladet Norrlands Varjehanda nr 3, 1964 med följande bildtext: ”Nationens Mikroskop- och Preparatförvaltare, MoFK Rudolf Aust rustar sig fysiskt för att möta alla de angrepp som ständigt hotar honom på den viktiga nationspost han innehar. NV som bevakat herr Austs övningar i tre veckor kan meddela att Mälarens isar är utomordentliga ända ner mot Sigtuna Stadshotell.”
I gåvan ingår ytterligare ett segel, trapetsformat med bamburigg. Detta är inhandlat vid en marknad för begagnade prylar i Uppsala i slutet av 1950 talet och är seglar några gånger. Ursprung i övrigt okänt. Seglet sparas som pedagogiskt material.
Att segla ett skridskosegel: Drakseglaren står i lä om sitt segel. Trots den snabba materialutvecklingen är bambu fortfarande det bästa materialvalet för akterrån. Seglet får vara 8,8 m2 och skridskorna 200 mm höga. Drakseglet går som snabbast ca 90 km/h.
