Sigfrid Ericson var befälhavare ombord på passagerarfartyget Gripsholm som gick linjetrafik (Svenska Amerika Linjen) mellan Sverige och USA under fredstiden som rådde innan andra världskriget bröt ut på bred front och drog in USA i kriget. Våren 1942 fattades beslutet att fartygen Gripsholm samt Drottningholm skulle låtas chartras av den amerikanska staten, vars intention var att använda det neutrala Sveriges fartyg för fångutväxling och transport av diplomater i konfliktzoner. Sigfrid Ericson var med som befälhavare på åtminstone två av dessa resor.
Sommaren 1943 mottog Gripsholms befälhavare, Sigfrid Ericson, ett officiellt dokument från den amerikanska staten som gav fartyget fri lejd under två resor inom vilka Gripsholm skulle komma att användas för deportering av japanska medborgare samt diplomater som skulle utväxlas mot amerikanska medborgare. En av resorna gick till Rio de Janeiro där Gripsholm plockade upp japanska diplomater. Den andra resan gick från New York till det neutrala Portugals besittning i Indien (Goa). Gripsholm mötte i Mormugão upp med det japanska fartyget Teia Maru (tidigare MS Aramis, 1931-1944) och mellan dem utväxlades 1340 japanska medborgare mot 1405 personer från huvudsakligen USA. En händelse som var relativt anonym i svensk press men som fick ett stort uppmärksammmande av den amerikanska pressen.
