Phrenological helmet

This helmet was made by inventor and polar explorer Salomon August Andrée after a trip to the United States. It is set according to his skull.

The helmet consists of an oval bowl made of sheet brass that is covered with leather on the inside. It is split across the top, with hinges and snaps. The helmet consists of an oval bowl made of sheet brass that is covered with leather on the inside. It is split across the top, with hinges and snaps. The plate is pierced by approx. 350 stud bolts with screw heads. The intention is to be able to measure the shape of the skull with this tool.

Phrenology is the study of a supposed connection between human abilities and the external shape of the skull. During the 19th century, a spectacular idea was developed that each characteristic has a location in the brain and when a characteristic develops in an individual, it is followed by the corresponding part of the skull bulging. The phrenologists believed they had identified 35 different bulges. This assumption has later been shown to be unfounded.

History

- Hjälmen gjordes av Andrée vid hemkomsten från USA. Den är inställd för S.A. Andrées huvudskål. Frenologi: Läran om antaget sambandet mellan självförmögenheter och skallens yttre form. En under 1800-talet utvecklad spektakulär tanke om att varje egenskap har en placering i hjärnan och när en egenskap utvecklas hos en individ följes det av att motsvarande del av skallen buktar ut. Frenologerna ansåg sig ha identifierat 35 olika utbuktningar.
