Med Saltsjöbanan, Djursholmsbanan och Roslagsbanan växte de första förorterna fram runt Stockholm. Uppbyggnaden av välfärdssamhället gick med rasande fart efter andra världskriget. Trycket på Stockholmsregionen blev enormt och bostadsbyggandet kulminerade på 1960-talet med miljonprogrammet. Gamla stationssamhällen blev nya bostadsområden och förorter.
1964 kom Stockholms stad och Stockholms läns landsting överens om en storsatsning på pendeltåg och AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) konstruerades utifrån Stockholms Spårvägar. Drygt 100 motorvagnståg anskaffades mellan 1967 och 1975. X1 blev sedan den typiska stockholmspendeln under drygt fyra decennier. Det finns nog inga järnvägsfordon i Sverige som har körts längre sammanlagd sträcka eller fraktat fler passagerare.
SJ bedrev pendeltrafiken åt SL fram till år 2000 då det privata Citypendeln tog över. Åtagandet varade i fem år innan det var dags för Stockholmståg AB. X1användes för sista gången våren 2011 i riktig trafik. Motorvagn 3019 sparades som museifordon och kördes för egen maskin till Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum i juli samma år för att kunna visas som ett typiskt pendeltåg.
