'Carl Vilhelm Roikjer var född i Kjöbenhavn och kom i unga år till bokhandeln, som han emellertid öfvergaf för att 1862 etablera sig som fotograf i Helsingör. Efter att hafva bott ett par år i Kjöbenhavn, flyttade R 1870 till Sverige, där han hade atelier i Göteborg, Venersborg och Halmstad, tills han 1878 bosatte sig i Malmö. Här skapade han sig en god affä, flyttade 1886 till den präktiga lokal, där Roikjerska ateliern fortfarande är belägen, utnämndes 1888 till kungl. hoffotograf och öfverlämnade 1896 affären i sin sons händer för att bosätta sig på sin egendom i Limhamn.
Roikjer afled i Malmö den 31 mars i år. Det var ett sträfsamt lif, som härmed lyktades, en intelligent, redbar och ovanligt vänfast kamrat, som gick bort. Bland sina kolleger i Danmark såväl som i Sverige hade han vetat förvärfva talrika vänner, och då Svenska Fotografernas Förbund stiftades var han själfskrifven medlem af dess styrelse, som han tillhörde till 1898. Han var jämväl juryman vid Stockholmsutställningen 1897.
Förenad i ett sällsynt lyckligt äktenskap med Camilla Kirchoff, som själf en skicklig fotograf, i mot- och medgång stått troget vid hans sida, efterlämnar han äfven en son. hoffotografen Victor Roikjer, som sedan 1896 är innehafvare af ateliern.

Carl Wilhelm Roikjer föddes 1842 i Köpenhamn. Han arbetade i en bokhandel, innan han 1862 etablerat sig som fotograf i Helsingör. 1870 kom han till Sverige, öppnade en fotoateljé i Göteborg, flyttade flera gånger innan han bosatte sig fast i Malmö 1881. Han övertog Hilda Sjölins ateljé på Västergatan, senare flyttade till Södergatan.
Carl Wilhelm Roikjer måste räknas som den störste av gamla Malmöfotografer, honom tackar vi för den bästa fotodokumentationen av staden vid förförra sekelskiftet. Hans son Victor, också fotograf, fortsatte i faderns spår och resultatet - drygt 1 500 stora glasnegativ - utgör nu flaggskeppet i Malmö Museers fotohistoriska samlingar, tack vare Malmö Förnminnesförening som köpte bilderna och donerade dem till dåvarande Malmö museum.
Kgl. Hovfotograf Carl Wilhelm Roikjer var aktiv i Svenska Fotogafernas Förbund, satt i dess styrelse. Han var gift med Camilla, född Kirshoff, som efter makens död 1902 drev firman fram till 1909 under namnet Atelier Favorit.
