Under 1930-talet öppnade ny semesterlagstiftning i kombination med växande friluftsintresse upp en marknad för en ny båttyp. Den lilla camping- eller passbåten, som den först kallades, gav även mindre välbeställda personer möjlighet att äga sin egen båt som kunde köpas till låg kostnad.
De första passbåtarna hade inombordsmotor, men det var utombordsmotorerna som gav båttypen sitt stora genomslag. 1930 användes namnet "campingbåt" för första gången. Man sov under kapellet i sovsäck direkt på durken eller på fällda sittsoffor - inte olikt ett tält på vattnet.
Båtkonstruktören Ruben Östlund skrev: "För week-end-färder är denna båt alldeles utmärkt, då god plats finnes för stuvning av proviant och utrustning. Båtens inredning kan dessutom lätt förändras, så att man genom att uppfälla de aktre sittbänkarna kan anordna tvenne liggplatser på durken. Då sun-tältet uppfällt och aktre täckstycket igenstängt, skyddar detta fullständigt. En annan fördel med en dylik behändig och grundgående båt är, att man kan passera ytterst grunda och trånga farleder, där en vanlig långfärdsbåt har stora svårigheter, eller ej alls kan komma fram, härigenom inbjudande till befarande av nya, för större båtar oåtkomliga farvatten."
Förutom Östlund ritade flera kända konstruktörer som C G Pettersson, Lage Eklund och Olle Enderlein sina egna varianter på campingbåtstemat. Eftersom campingbåtarna seriebyggdes behövde inte köparen lägga en förbeställning. Serieproduktionen höll priset nere vilket i sin tur ökade försäljningen. Fram till plastbåtarnas intång under 1960-talet såldes campingbåtarna i stort antal, men idag finns få överlevande exemplar kvar i gott skick.
