I augusti 1956 lyckades amatörarkeologen Anders Franzén lokalisera vad som skulle visa sig vara vraket efter regalskeppet Vasa, som förliste utanför Beckholmen på sin jungfrufärd 1628.
Från hösten 1956 till april 1961 genomförde 36 tungdykare från marinen 2 200 dykningar omfattande 4 500 timmar under ledningen av Per Edvin Fälting. I fler än 1 500 dyktimmar låg marinens dykare nere i leran och gyttjan i en 80x100 centimeter bred tunnel, 33 meter under havsytan och 22 meter in i tunneln. Man arbetade där med vattenspolning och sugslangar i fullständigt mörker, instängda i en dykarhuv, vid många tillfällen utan att kunna vända sig i tunneln. Trots de farliga förhållandena skedde inga allvarligare olyckor.
Skeppet förflyttades till grundare vatten genom 18 lyft mellan augusti och september 1959; man tog henne från 32 m djup till 16 m, och till ett mer skyddat område av Kastellholmsviken som gjorde dykningar mindre komplicerade. Där förbereddes skeppet för det sista lyftet mot ytan i ett och ett halvt år.
Bråte, slagg och lera rensades från de övre däcken för att göra vraket lättare och man gjorde skrovet så vattentätt som möjligt. Kanonportarna tätades med specialbyggda luckor, en tillfällig ersättning för det kollapsade akterkastellet byggdes och tusentals hål efter järnbultar som rostat bort pluggades igen. Den 24 april 1961 gjordes det slutliga lyftet av Vasa vid Kastellholmen. Därefter tätades skeppet och placerades på en särskilt ponton inför bogseringen till Gustaf V:s torrdocka på Beckholmen, där det genomgick en arkeologisk utgrävning.
